Service Virtualization of Cloud IMS

One of the considerable use cases for network functions virtualization (NFV) is the IP multimedia subsystem (IMS). With the emergence of software-defined network (SDN) and NFV, the mobile network operators (MNOs) that are deploying the IMS look to make a gain from these leading technologies to mitigate hardware costs and reduce time to market. With the use especially of the NFV approach, the MNO looks for scaling services up and down fast and also reduce costs to align with network usage. In this paper, we give an introduction to a virtualized IMS based telecommunications platform called Telecom Cloud Manager as a virtualized and extended architecture of the 4G/LTE system, being defined by the 3GPP, toward a proposed five generation (5G) paradigm. We intend to migrate all IP switching layers to virtualized entities, including servers and network elements, by using one of the leading virtualization technologies and concepts involving a cloud manager, and an NFV framework. On that account, we set up a testbed system with the goal of evaluating the behavior of a virtualized IMS core network, as part of telecom operators’ networks, within a static service provisioning context. Experiment results show that resource performance could be enhanced quickly in the case of unforeseen degradation by supporting a new VNF based service chain.

Messaging – a Digital Engagement

Messaging is an “app” — an application on their mobile phone that they use to communicate with friends and family. But, Messaging is becoming a ‘platform’ upon which, in the future, applications will be built.

Let me put my neck out and share my thoughts about why Messaging as a Platform is the Next Big Thing!

Data and statistics have proven that Messaging apps are used more than social networks and Messaging apps are the most used mobile apps. hence we have started seeing this digital engagement to consumers from brands or peers at paramount importance.

In this avenue, we have been hearing out about,

  • Messaging as a Platform (MaaP) —the evolution of Messaging Systems from closed systems in which messages can originate and terminate only in the system’s Messaging App to a ‘platform’ upon which others can build applications that send and receive messages. Messaging as a Platform should include all the ‘platform features’ that application developers expect from platforms such as API’s/frameworks and ecosystem. Although many Messaging Systems have signaled that they are moving towards becoming Messaging Platforms (e.g. Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Kik) in my opinion, only SMS and WeChat have currently reached MaaP status.
  • RCS will provide a pure messaging environment where mobile operators remain an integral element of the value chain. Undoubtedly, RCS represents the logical evolution of messaging for mobile operators. It delivers a richer and more immersive experience, not forgetting actionable analytics on a par with data provided by OTT messaging services
  • The chatbots will converge to integrate conversational AI into RCS. That’s because as of interoperability & security driven and controlled by government body GSMA, unlike Internet messaging giants ending up with governmental conflicts. The RCS  Universal Profile 2.0 focused on including plug-in for integration, APIs, enhanced authentication and security to most BoTs and commerce application going forward.

IoT Genesis

Internet of things has not just been a buzz word in the last year, but has shown actual business ROI. Looking at the successful implementation of IoT in chosen sectors of manufacturing, telecom, energy, etc., even mainstream industries are looking at IoT as the accelerator to drive business objective and digital transformation. 

2020 won’t be a silver bullet year for IoT, but, nonetheless, IoT will witness a massive adoption and will lead to digital transformation and disruption unseen before.  Business Insider predicts business spending on IoT solutions will hit $6 trillion by 2021.   2. Business Transformation Powered by IoT: IoT will act as a shot in the arm for business transformation, creating a connected business framework, with connected logistics, connected workforce, and connected consumers.
  3. IoT platforms, hardware and solutions help in creating a smart ecosystem and enabling digital disruption.
  4. Smart Home & Smart City Projects become a reality: With the Increased adoption of IoT, smart home, and smart cities project will become mainstream and largely adopted across the globe.
  5. LPWAN technologies will open up the IoT market: Low-power wide area networks (LPWAN) technologies, like Narrowband IoT, allow for amplified network coverage over a wide area at a comparatively lower cost, making them the perfect technology for enabling connectivity in remote areas.
  6. Edge Computing: While companies are beginning to move toward cloud computing, edge computing, driven by the absolute volume and speed of data generated by the IoT, is taking the driver’s seat in the ecosystem.
  7. As smart drones, self-driving vehicles, and other AI-powered smart devices grow and need to connect and communicate in real time through the IoT sensors, the effort of transmitting data to the cloud becomes exceedingly impractical. Edge computing becomes most viable as most of these devices will need real-time response and processing.
  8. Digital Twin: IoT and digital twin will grow in parallel. The current acceleration in the adoption and growth of digital twin is powered by IoT and lowering cost of technologies. The IoT sensors and devices are the enablers to feed data to the framework and models to the create a replica of the real twin, the digital twin.
  9. Advanced Analytics and Machine learning to aid IoT growth: With a massive network of sensors, IoT will generate an enormous amount of data every second. This data has the power to optimize business processes, create a better customer experience, optimize cost and deliver business profitability.
  10. Security, Compliance and Privacy challenges of IoT: With the increased deployment of IoT technologies, concerns around Security, Compliance, and Privacy will become critical. With the expansion in the IoT ecosystem and increased fragmentation, the network will grow more complex and will lead to challenges around the compliance requirement, security, and privacy of data.
  11. The adoption of as-a-service IoT solutions: With the growth in the IoT market, the as-a-service business models and solution will also see an upward trend. For instance, by 2021, overall market revenues for IoT managed security-as-a-services are set to exceed $11 Billion.

While the industry is positively adopting IoT, there are multiple angles to IoT that are yet to be explored and expedited. 2018 will witness the expansion of IoT and penetration in more personal space versus the current business and industry use cases.

5G changes your life in future

If you look at the corner of your phone, you’re probably used to seeing a little indicator that says 4G LTE, 3G, or, god forbid, 2G, and you’ve come to recognize that it probably has something to do with your phone’s connection to your mobile network. The higher the “G,” the faster the connection.

But all those networks will be things of the past because on the horizon is 5G. And while you may be thinking that 5G is just a little faster, a little more reliable, and a little newer, it’s actually more than that. It’s a massive breakthrough that’s going to change the way devices connect to the internet, and more importantly, to each other. In fact, as 5G rolls out over the next two years, it’s going to change everything that uses a wireless connection; at this point, it is pretty much everything. So, what’s so special about a 5G future?

It shall make all our Sci-Fi movie scenes a future, let’s touch up on.,

  • Self-driving cars may be one of the biggest breakthroughs to come out of 5G.
  • 4G can go ten kilometers and barely lose signal. 5G maxes out at about 300 meters and can’t go through walls or rain.
